GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Chris Green who has served as a head coach of two different ACHA hockey programs at Davenport for the past 14 seasons has announced he will step down from his current position as head coach of the ACHA Division II program. Green has been the head coach of the ACHA Division II hockey program for the past eight seasons and previously was the ACHA Division III program head coach for six seasons.
"We are excited to start the next chapter with this program," said Ryan McCosky, Director of Non-Varsity Sports and Programming. "Chris's passion and dedication will be missed. No doubt about it. Matt understands the foundation here but brings his own leadership style and fresh new ideas which we are excited about."
Green was able to compile 178 wins on the bench for the ACHA Division III program and also won 109 games during his tenure with the ACHA Division II program.
"Chris Green has committed his life to coaching hockey," said Paul Lowden, Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. "He is a great teacher of the game, but more importantly a better mentor for his student-athletes. He has the unique ability to connect and engage with his team to better prepare them for life after hockey. I will not only miss having Coach Green behind the bench, but as a colleague and friend. I wish Chris all the best in his new endeavor and I know he will take his passion for teaching, coaching and building relationships to his next challenge."
Matt Krzykwa has been tabbed to take over the head coaching duties of the ACHA Division II program. Krzykwa has served as an assistant coach under Green since September 2018. He grew up in the Grand Rapids area and played hockey at Grand Rapids Catholic Central High School and Aquinas College. Matt has also been involved in youth hockey coaching at Fox Motors since 2015.
"I am excited to pick up where Chris Green left off," said Krzykwa. "He has created a great foundation and culture here that I have been lucky to be a part of for the past four years and now get to continue to build off into the future. I have always had a passion to lead kids and help mold them into men, not only on the ice, but also as they transition to their respective careers. To be able to do this as the head coach of the ACHA Division II program is a great honor. I want to thank Davenport for trusting me in this position and I look forward to keeping Davenport as a national powerhouse in hockey that it has been for the past 15 years."
