SANDUSKY, Ohio - The third-seeded Davenport softball team led sixth-seeded Ferris State, 3-1, with two outs and nobody on in the top of the sixth inning on Saturday in the GLIAC Tournament quarterfinals. The Bulldogs proceeded to score five runs on six hits to go ahead by three, 6-3, and the Panthers were unable to come back en route to a 6-5 defeat. DU's 2022 campaign comes to an end with an overall record of 25-22.
Davenport struck first in the second inning when
Gabby Palazzolo singled in
Ellie Muilenburg with a base knock to left field. After Ferris State tied things up at one run apiece in the third, the Panthers came right back with a pair of runs in the home half of the third thanks to a
Rylie Kalina RBI groundout and RBI single off the bat of
Lindsay Goodman. Those two runs put DU ahead 3-1 and the score would stay like that for two full innings before the Bulldogs' five-run sixth inning.
In the bottom of the sixth, Davenport got two runs back with an
Alexis Koza RBI single and
Rachel Griffin RBI double (Koza was thrown out at home trying to score), but could do no more damage.
Palazzolo (2-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB), Koza (2-for-4, 1 RBI) and Griffin (2-for-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB) each tallied a multi-hit day for the Panthers.
Riley Hasseld, Kalina, Goodman, and
Brooke Cowan each notched a hit as well.
In the circle, Muilenburg (12-12) gave up six earned runs on seven hits with five walks and eight strikeouts.
Emma Miller handled the final inning and a third of relief with two hits allowed, only one free pass and three punchouts.
