Preview: Panthers set for crosstown matchup against Lakers

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Searching for their first victory in over five matches, the Davenport University women's soccer team is back home for a pivotal crosstown matchup against No. 10 Grand Valley State University.

DU posted a 0-2-2 record during a trivial two-week road trip that saw only two goals scored by the Panthers: Haley Diekevers preventing a shutout against Parkside (2-1 loss) and Madison Fant in a 1-1 draw against Michigan Tech. This marked the team's lowest margin of goals scored in back-to-back weeks after tallying 12 goals across five matches to start the year.

Gabriana Bennecke has maintained a top-five position in the GLIAC for saves, currently T-fourth with 30 total. Both Diekevers and Fant remain in a five-way deadlock in the conference leaderboards for goals scored (T-fourth) with four overall.

Now No. 5 in the GLIAC with a 1-2-3 record (4-2-3 overall), the Panthers have seen far better success when on their home pitch. Poised for a promising match against a longtime rival, DU will look to add a positive tally to their 4-0-1 home record.

GVSU Matchup
The Lakers' No. 10 rank in the NCAA Division II is their highest rank since the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll was released on Aug. 1. GVSU has maintained a top-25 position for the last three weeks with a current record of 6-1-3 overall as they sit atop of the GLIAC leaderboards at 4-0-2.

Kendall Robertson is fresh off a GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week honor after the team finished last week in a 0-0 draw against previously No. 18 Northern Michigan and posted seven saves to shutout Michigan Tech, 2-0. Emma Chudik leads the team in goals scored with five (T-second in GLIAC) and was also recently honored as GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week in week three for the team's only other conference award this season.

In nine meetings since 2017, the Panthers haven't been able to defeat the Lakers (0-9), making this match a potential historical moment for DU.
