Panthers Conclude Music City Invitational with a Win

SMYRNA, Tenn. - The Davenport University softball team defeated Tiffin 2-1 Sunday morning on the final day of the Music City Invitational at Cedar Stone Park. 

 The Panthers (3-1, 0-0 GLIAC) scored both of their runs in the bottom of the first inning. Hayley Kreiger stepped up to bat with Gabby Palazzolo on second base, as she crushed the ball up the middle allowing Palazzolo to advance home and take a 1-0 lead.

Kaycee Loehr capped off the inning as she singled to left field to bring home Kreiger and DU gained the early 2-0 advantage.

The Dragons (2-3, 0-0 G-MAC) responded in the top of the third inning to set the score at 2-1 in favor of the Panthers. Davenport's defense stepped up the remainder of the inning, as Tiffin's last two batters grounded out, leaving two runners on base. 

Emma Miller (1-0) got the win in the circle for DU, pitching the final four innings while only allowing one hit and striking out four batters. Kelsey Byers (1-0) pitched the first three innings innings, only allowing two hits and a run while registering three strikeouts. 

Offensively, Palazzolo hit 1-for-2 with a run in the victory for Davenport. Kreiger finished with one hit, an RBI, and a run, while Loehr registered a hit and an RBI.

The Panthers will return to action next week in Evansville, Ind. for the Blue Bridge Battle from Feb. 24-26. Davenport will open the weekend on Friday with a rematch against No. 14 Indianapolis at 11 a.m. followed by a matchup with Northwood at 1 p.m.
