EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Davenport University softball team returned to action at the Blue Bridge Battle, falling to Illinois Springfield and Cedarville at Deaconess Sports Park on Saturday afternoon.
Game 1 vs. Illinois Springfield
Result: L, 6-2
How it Happened:
Entering the top of the fifth inning trailing 4-0, the Panthers (3-5, 0-0 GLIAC) began to find success offensively. Brooke Bernt pinch-ran for Kaycee Loehr after reaching first base on a line drive toward the shortstop. With runners on first and second, Alex Rendon hit the ball to left-center field to bring home Bernt a give DU its first run of the contest.
On the ensuing at-bat, Gabby Palazzolo singled to right-center field, allowing Becca Daoust to reach home plate.
After allowing two runs in the bottom of the fifth and staring down a four-point deficit, Davenports' offense was unable to put more runs on the board. However, the Panthers' defense stepped up in the bottom of the sixth as it was three up and three down for the Prairie Stars (9-4, 0-0 GLVC)
Loehr started the final inning with a single, but the deficit was too much, and DU could not come back down the stretch.
Leading the way for DU was Loehr, batting 2-for-3 in the loss. Palazollo and Rendon each ended with a hit and an RBI, while Riley Hasseld registered one hit for the Panthers.
In the circle, Emma Miller (1-2) pitched all six innings for Davenport, recording five strikeouts.
Game 2 vs. Cedarville
Result: L, 3-2
How it Happened:
Davenports' defense held strong in the low-scoring affair, only allowing one run through the first six innings. The Panthers scored their first run in the bottom of the third inning as Daoust reached home on an RBI from Palazzolo to tie the game at one apiece
DU took its first lead in the contest in the sixth inning as Hayley Kreiger got things started with a triple to right field. Loehr flew out on the ensuing at-bat to right field, allowing Krieger to score and taking a slim 2-1 lead heading into the final inning.
The Panthers couldn't hold on in the final inning, allowing two runs to the Yellow Jackets (3-5, 0-0 G-MAC) while being unable to score any of their own in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Kelsey Byers (1-2) pitched all seven innings for the Panthers, throwing six strikeouts during her time in the circle.
