Panthers Edged by Eagles in Defensive Battle

ASHLAND, Ohio - The Davenport softball team dropped a pair of games to Ashland Tuesday afternoon. Following the losses, the Panthers (5-14, 0-0 GLIAC) have now dropped seven games by two runs or fewer. Today's doubleheader marked the first-ever official game played at the Deb Miller Field at the Archer Ballpark Complex, the new home stadium for the Eagles (6-14, 0-0 G-MAC).

Game 1
Result: L, 3-2
How it Happened:
The Panthers controlled the game early on, ending the top of the fifth with a 2-0 advantage over the Eagles.

Elisse Omey put the first run on the board in the second inning after hitting a triple to right center field, marking the first triple of the freshman's collegiate career. DU loaded the bases but was unable to bring any more runs home in the inning.

Kaycee Loehr stepped into the box, drilling one to left-center field, allowing Brooke Bernt to score the Panthers' second run of the contest. Ashland responded by scoring three runs in the ensuing two innings to gain a one-run lead over Davenport going into the final inning.

Hayley Kreiger finished batting 2-for-4 to lead the Panthers' offense. Omey and Bernt registered one hit and one run each, while Loehr and Gabby Palazzolo recorded one hit apiece.

In the circle, Emma Miller pitched five innings, tossing four strikeouts, and only allowed two runs for DU.

Game 2
Result: L, 3-1
How it Happened:
Following a scoreless first inning, Ashland garnered a 3-0 advantage to conclude the second.

Palazzolo made an impressive play to conclude the third inning, diving to her right to stop the ball and throwing out Hailey Krinn at first base to get the Panthers out of the inning.

Brooke Cowan blasted the first pitch of the fifth inning out of the park for the Panthers, trimming the deficit to two. Later in the inning, Aaliyah Walker slid into home plate but was thrown out on a close call to end the fifth.

Defense was prominent for both sides in the final two innings, as neither team scored for the remainder of the game, and only two hits were registered.

Cowan led the way with the lone run for Davenport, while Palazzolo, Riley Hasseld, Kreiger, Walker, and Alex Rendon all added one hit.

Kelsey Byers threw six strikeouts through 5.1 innings pitched, while Makayla Thompson tossed a pair of strikeouts in the sixth inning.

Up Next:
The Panthers now prepare for their home and GLIAC opener, a doubleheader against Purdue Northwest on Saturday at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex at 1 p.m. with the second game to follow.
