Panthers Sweep Parkside in GLIAC Opener

CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Davenport University softball team played its first home games of the season Sunday afternoon, collecting a pair of wins over Parkside in its GLIAC opener. The Panthers (7-14, 2-0 GLIAC) have won nine consecutive home games dating back to April 12, 2022, a 9-7 win over Purdue Northwest last season.

Game 1
Result: W, 10-8
How it Happened:
Facing a 4-1 deficit heading into the third inning, the Panthers had their best inning of the season, exploding for nine runs while holding the Rangers (9-17, 0-4 GLIAC) scoreless.

Brooke Cowan scored the go-ahead run as Aaliyah Walker singled to left-center field midway through the inning. Hayley Kreiger capped off the inning with a home run, her second of the season, to with Riley Hasseld on base to expand the lead to 10-4.

Davenports' defense was able to get the job done the rest of the way, holding Parkside to four runs through the remaining four innings.

Kreiger led the way offensively for DU, batting 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs, and two runs. Gabby Palazzolo recorded a pair of runs, RBIs, and hits, including a triple in the first at-bat of the game for the Panthers. Hassled, Walker, Becca Daoust, and Lindsay Goodman all registered two hits for Davenport.

In the circle, Makayla Thompson picked up her second win of the season, pitching the final 5.1 innings and recording a pair of strikeouts.

Game 2
Result: W, 6-2
How it Happened:
Kelsey Byers tossed a season-high 12 strikeouts through seven innings pitched to lead the Panthers to their second victory of the day.

Davenport took control late in the contest, bringing home four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to seal the game. Palazzolo brought home the go-ahead run with a double to right-center field, allowing Walker to reach home plate.

On the ensuing at-bat, Hasseld drilled the ball just past the head of the pitcher to help score two more runs and extend the lead to 5-2.

Moments later, Hassled scored the final run of the game as Kreiger sent one into the outfield.

Hasseld finished with two hits, two RBIs, and one run in the victory for Davenport. Kreiger scored twice, with one hit and one RBI, while Palazzolo chipped in with a double, an RBI, one run, and a stolen base for DU.
