Panthers Pause GLIAC Action, Split with Hillsdale

CALEDONIA, Mich. -  The Davenport University softball team took a break from conference play as they hosted Hillsdale Monday afternoon at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex. The Panthers (11-20, 5-5 GLIAC) split with the Chargers (22-15, 8-2 G-MAC), as senior infielder Gabby Palazzolo finished the afternoon batting 6-for-7 with one double, one triple, three runs, and two RBIs through the two games.

Game 1
Result: W, 3-2
How it Happened:
Kelsey Byers led the defensive effort through the first five innings of action for DU. After walking the first batter of the game, the graduate student struck out six consecutive batters in the first and second innings.

Offensively, all three batters at the top of Davenports' lineup got on base to start the bottom of the first inning. A sacrifice fly to right field by Lindsay Goodman allowed Palazzolo to get the first run of the day, taking a 1-0 advantage.

Palazzolo batted in Aaliyah Walker, who doubled to left center field, to score the second run of the contest for DU.

With the game hanging in the balance, tied at two apiece heading into the sixth, Hayley Kreiger made a double play in the top of the inning as she caught a line drive then tagged the runner out at first to help get the HC offense off the field.

Moments later, Kreiger then singled through the left side to bring home Brooke Bernt in what would turn out to be the game-winning run.

Kreiger batted a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI for the Panthers, while Riley Hasseld and Palazzolo each added a pair of hits.

Game 2
Result: L, 12-6
How it Happened:
Davenport found itself in a hole early after a grand slam from the Chargers' Grace Wallner in the top of the first inning forced an early four-run deficit.

The Panthers fought their way back into the game, tying it at four apiece in the second inning after Kaycee Loehr rounded the bases off a Hasseld single.

However, Hillsdale did most of its damage in the fourth inning, scoring six runs on five hits to garner a seven-run advantage.

Palazzolo recorded her fourth triple of the season in the bottom of the sixth, bombing one to left center field and using her speed to safely round second base. On the ensuing at-bat, Hasseld beat out a throw from the opposing shortstop to notch her second hit of the game, while bringing Palazzolo home from third.

Palazzolo finished the back half of the doubleheader batting a perfect 4-for-4 with a double, a triple, two runs, and an RBI for Davenport, while Hasseld added two hits and two RBIs.

Bernt chipped in with a pair of hits and one run for the Panthers. The sophomore has now scored a run in four consecutive games, while registering at least one hit in five straight.

In the circle, four pitchers saw game action for DU; Miller, MaKayla Thompson, Elise Magnus, and Byers, combined for seven strikeouts in the contest.

Up Next:
The Panthers will resume GLIAC play against Saginaw Valley State on Wednesday in University Center, Mich. at 2 p.m. with the second game of the doubleheader to follow.
