Panthers Swept by Cardinals, Palazzolo Inches Closer to School Record

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -  The Davenport softball resumed GLIAC action, dropping a pair of games to Saginaw Valley State in the Wednesday afternoon doubleheader.

Gabby Palazzolo registered four hits through the two games, moving her up to No. 2 in career hits in program history with 223. The senior is now just four away from setting the school record, which is currently held by Amber Getty (226).

Game 1
Result: L, 7-0
How it Happened:
The Panthers' offense struggled to find a rhythm in game one, finishing the game with seven hits, two of which came in the last inning.

Following a scoreless first inning, the Cardinals brought home a pair of runs in the second to take the first lead of the contest. SVSU held DU scoreless for the remainder of the game while putting up a pair of runs in both the fifth and sixth inning to gain a 7-0 lead late.

Brooke Cowan finished with a team-high two hits, while Lindsay Goodman added a double for the Panthers.

Kelsey Byers pitched all six innings for Davenport, tossing five strikeouts in the loss.

Game 2
Result: L, 9-7
How it Happened:
Davenport turned things around offensively in game two, as Goodman brought home two runners in the opening inning to gain a quick 2-0 edge over SVSU.

Heading into the fourth inning trailing 4-2, the Panthers had three runners round the bases to regain the lead with a one-run advantage. Brooke Bernt spurred the rally leading off the inning with a single to right field.

The Panthers' three runs came on consecutive at-bats, starting with Riley Hasseld bringing home Kaycee Loehr for the first run of the inning. Aaliyah Walker and Palazzolo scored the other two runs to cap off the inning.

However, the Cardinals responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead for the remainder of the game.

Palazzolo led the way for Davenport, batting 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Hasseld added two hits, an RBI, and a run, while Walker chipped in with two hits and two runs.

MaKayla Thompson and Elise Magnus split time in the circle, striking out a combined three batters through six innings.

Up Next
Looking ahead, Davenport will return home for a doubleheader against Ferris State on Saturday at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex at 1 p.m. with the second game to follow. The Panthers swept the Bulldogs (15-26, 4-7 GLIAC) in Big Rapids earlier this season.
