Palazzolo Continues to Rewrite Record Books as Panthers Sweep Warriors

CALEDONIA, Mich. -  Gabby Palazzolo became the new all-time career hits leader in program history, leading the Davenport softball team to a pair of victories over Wayne State Wednesday afternoon at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex. The senior second baseman secured her 227th career hit to surpass Amber Getty (2011-2014) for the most hits in a career as a Panther.

Palazzolo will arguably go down as one of the best players to ever put on a Davenport softball uniform. The Sterling Heights, Mich. native ranks among the top-ten in program history in the following career statistics; doubles (7th), triples (3rd), stolen bases (1st), total bases (6th), runs scored (4th), highest stolen base percentage (1st), and highest batting average (10th).

Game 1
Result: W, 9-1 (5 Inn.)
How it Happened:
Palazzolo set the new school record in the bottom of the fourth inning, recording two hits as the Panthers' (13-26, 7-11 GLIAC) offense exploded for six runs.

Holding a 3-1 lead going into the bottom of the fourth, Becca Daoust secured the first hit of the inning as she laid down a bunt and used her speed to get on base.

With a pair of runners on base, Riley Hasseld stepped into the batters box and drilled the ball down the right-field line into the outfield, bringing home both Daoust and Palazzolo.

Kaycee Loehr capped off the impressive stretch for DU as she scored the final run of the game with Brooke Bernt reaching on a fielder's choice.

Palazollo finished with two hits and two runs in the victory for the Panthers. Hasseld has a game-high three hits, including a triple, to go along with two runs and two RBIs for DU. Lindsay Goodman added a double, one RBI, and one run, while Kaycee Loehr chipped in with a hit and two RBIs.

Kelsey Byers pitched all five innings for the Panthers, only allowing one earned run while tossing three strikeouts.

Game 2
Result: W, 9-8
How it Happened:
Hayley Kreiger, the Panthers' home run leader on the season (6), stepped up to the plate with two outs on the board. Facing a 3-0 count, the senior took a swing on a ball down the middle, crushing it over the fence to tie the game at one a piece in the bottom of the first inning.

Davenport did most of its damage in the fifth inning, as Kreiger once again made things happen. The first baseman hit the ball into the outfield, bringing home a pair of base runners (Palazzolo and Daoust). However, a fielding error from the Warriors (16-28, 5-17 GLIAC) allowed Kreiger to round the bases and score on the play, setting the score at 4-4.

Later in the inning, Loehr hit her first career home run to give the Panthers their first lead of game two.

Goodman brought home the final two runs of the game for DU in the fifth inning, as she had a two-RBI single.

Kreiger had a dominating performance to lead the Panthers, batting a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBIs and a pair of runs. Daoust finished with two hits, two runs, and a stolen base in the win for DU. Goodman and Loehr each added a hit and two RBIs for the Panthers.

Davenport used all four of its pitchers in game two; MaKayla Thompson, Emma Miller, Elise Magnus, and Kelsey Byers. Thompson received the win, tossing four strikeouts through 4.2 innings pitched.

Up Next
Looking ahead, the Panthers will head back on the road for a pair of doubleheaders against Parkside (April 28) and Purdue Northwest (April 29).
