Panthers Split Doubleheader with Warriors Behind Dominant Second Game

DETROIT, Mich. - After dropping the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against Wayne State by one run, the Davenport University softball team bounced back with a dominating 11-1 win to split the doubleheader.

Hayley Kreiger continues to be one of the most prominent offensive threats in the GLIAC for the Panthers (10-19, 5-5 GLIAC), as she hit a home run in both contests. The graduate student has knocked five balls out of the park this season, including three in her last five games played.

Game 1
Result: L, 9-8
How it Happened:
Davenport dominated the early portions of the game, jumping out to a commanding 5-0 advantage following an offensive eruption in the second inning.

With the bases loaded and two outs on the board, Gabby Palazzolo brought home all three base runners with a triple to right field. On the ensuing at-bat, Riley Hasseld singled to left center field, allowing Palazzolo to reach home plate.

After surrendering six runs in the fourth inning to the Warriors (12-18, 2-8 GLIAC), DU scored a combined three runs in the following two innings to gain an 8-6 edge heading into the final inning.

The Panthers recorded two out in the bottom of the seventh while only allowing one batter to get on base. However, WSU finished the game with four straight hits to get the narrow victory in a nail-biting finish.

Hasseld had an all-around performance, batting 3-4 with two runs and an RBI to lead DU. Palazzolo added two hits, three RBIs, and two runs, while Kreiger finished with a home run and two RBIs.

Kelsey Byers and Emma Miller split time in the circle, combining for five strikeouts for Davenport.

Game 2
Result: W, 11-1
How it Happened:
Davenport got its revenge in the back half of the doubleheader, posting its best offensive output since the first of the season in a 12-11 victory over Kentucky Wesleyan (Feb. 17).

Kaycee Loehr and Brooke Cowan started things off for the Panthers, as they each batted a runner home on consecutive at-bats to gain a 2-1 lead in the third inning. Moments later, Brooke Bernt brought home both Loehr and Cowan as she singled to right center field.

Palazzolo capped off the impressive third inning, as she singled to second, allowing Miller to score from third base.

All of the remaining six runs came in the seventh inning, as DU put the game out of reach with an insurmountable 10-run advantage. With Hasseld on second base, Kreiger bombed another one out of the park to cap off the six-run inning and seal the game.

Bernt ended with a career-high three hits to go along with two RBIs and a run for the Panthers. Kreiger, Lindsay Goodman, and Aaliyah Walker all added two hits in the win for DU

In the circle, Emma Miller got the win, tossing two strikeouts through four innings pitched while only allowing three hits. MaKayla Thompson pitched the closing three innings, only allowing one hit during her time in the circle.

Up Next:
The Panthers will put a pause on GLIAC action and take on Hillsdale in a doubleheader on Monday at the Farmers Athletic Complex in Caledonia, Mich. at 1 p.m. with the second game to follow.
