Women's Soccer Preview: Panthers to compete in GLIAC action

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Following their historical stretch in weeks one and two, the Davenport University women's soccer team is set for their first GLIAC matchups as the No. 9-ranked team in the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Divison II Midwest Region Poll.

DU  finished 3-0 in dominant showings against Quincy, Truman State, and Tiffin University all at home, with Haley Diekevers and Madison Fant tallying three goals apiece for DU's total 10. Izabelle Olsson, Gabby Scholten, Julia Tamasy, and Joy VanDam were also instrumental with one assist each (six total for the team), as Gabriana Bennecke has played all 270 minutes in the nets for the Panthers with four saves total and three-straight shutouts.

Poised against Saginaw Valley State University and No. 4 Ferris State University at home, the Panthers offense and defense will be tested at great lengths.

SVSU Matchup
The Cardinals are 3-1 to start the season with their only loss suffered last week against Ashland University (2-1). Madi Bajis and Stephanie Strong are the leading goal scorers with three each, as Strong leads the team in shot attempts (16) and total points (nine). Goalkeeper Lainey Garbarz recorded the team's first and only shutout against Truman State (3-0), with the two other victories coming against Quincy University (4-2) and Findlay (2-1).

Historically, the Panthers have struggled against SVSU as the overall record stands at 2-8 in favor of the Cardinals, and DU hoping to snap their five-match losing streak dating back to the 2021 season.

Ferris Matchup
Coming in at No. 4 in the nation as the 2022 Midwest Regional Champions, Ferris State is currently 2-1-1 this season with a draw against Findlay (0-0) and a shutout loss against Ashland (3-0).

Isabella Baron, Haley Buckman, Payton Price, Bella Vallone, and Katherine Welch have all contributed to the team's five goals scored this season with one apiece; Price leading the team in assists with two total.

DU is still looking for its first victory against the Bulldogs as their matchup record stands at 0-8-2 overall. Last season, the Panthers finished the first meeting in a 1-1 draw and lost the second match in a 0-1 shutout.
