Preview: Panthers up north in a pair of road matches

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Davenport women's soccer will head north this weekend for a pair of matchups against Michigan Tech and No. 18 Northern Michigan University.

Last week the team finished 0-1-1 following their first loss of the season against Wisconsin-Parkside, 1-2, and a draw against Purdue Northwest, 0-0, marking their overall record at 4-1-2 (1-1-2 in GLIAC).

After their lowest goals scored in a week and first week without a victory, Haley Diekevers remains on top of the GLIAC leaderboards for most goals scored (T-third with four) after scoring the only goal for DU against Parkside in the final minute, and Gabriana Bennecke maintains her first-place tie for the lowest goals-against average in conference action (0.43 GAA).

This week will be DU's third and fourth straight road matches as the Panthers look to get back on the winning side against two nationally recognized opponents.

Michigan Tech Matchup
The Huskies are ranked No. 10 in the United Soccer Coaches Midwest Regional Poll as they maintain a No. 2 position in the GLIAC leaderboards (3-0-1) and have a season record of 4-1-3. Tech has played solid ball at home and on the road with records of 2-1-1 and 2-0-2 respectively, coming off a big win against Ferris State (2-1) in their last appearance.

Seulgi Lee leads the Huskies with four goals (T-third in GLIAC) and eight points with a .556 shot-on-goal percentage thus far, followed closely by Cassie Bonifas (three goals, seven points) who has produced solid results herself on a .636 shot-on-goal percentage. Goalkeeper Gracie VanLangevelde has appeared and started in all eight matches for the Huskies as her 0.54 GAA sits at No. 3 in the GLIAC with a solid .852 save percentage overall, allowing just four goals on 23 saves this year.

DU will look to snap its cold streak in the Upper Peninsula as the last five appearances against Tech have produced little results with a 0-4-1 record since the 2021 spring season and not a single goal scored.

NMU Matchup
Molly Pistorius has tallied six goals (No. 1 in GLIAC) for 13 points for the Wildcats, helping to lead the team to a No. 18 ranking in the nation and No. 3 in the Midwest Regional. NMU is 6-1-1 through eight matches, starting conference play with a 2-1-1 record as Hannah Kastamo (four goals, two assists, 10 points) and Stephanie Trujillo (three goals, three assists, nine points) have added to the team's success - Pistorious and Kastamo's points leading the GLIAC at first and second place respectively.

Jillian Thompson has been the sole goalkeeper so far this year for all eight matches, allowing six goals with 15 saves total - the fourth most goals allowed by a GLIAC keeper of all eight conference teams (minimum six matches played).

The Panthers have faired a bit better against this opponent with a historical record of 2-3-2 overall, although they will also look to turn things around against NMU as the last four matches have resulted in a 0-3-1 record.
