DAVENPORT UNIVERSITY PANTHERS
WSOC Preview Week 6

Women's Soccer Anthony Clark Jr., Assistant Manager of Athletic Communications

Preview: Panthers continue homestand with SVSU and Roosevelt on the horizon

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Improving to 3-3-3 overall (1-2-2 GLIAC) after clinching the program's biggest upset in its NCAA Division II history, Davenport University women's soccer continues a long stretch of home matches this weekend.

Elizabeth Wolter was named GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week following a 1-0 shutout victory over then-No. 2 Grand Valley State, the first true freshman to receive the honor since the program moved to NCAA competition. Taylor Meadows recorded the game-winner - her first as a Panther - over the crosstown rival, recording the second score of her DU career.

The shutout moved the Panthers up the conference standings to No. 6 ahead of their Week Five matchups as the latter half of the regular season kicks off this weekend.

SVSU Matchup
DU swept the 2023 regular season matchup against the Cardinals (2-0) after a 1-0 shutout at home was later followed by a dominant 4-0 victory on the road. The wins improved the historical series for the Panthers to 4-8 overall, snapping a cold streak that stretched across 2021 and 2022.

The Cardinals were tabbed to finish third in the GLIAC Preseason Poll and have posted a 4-4-1 record (2-2-1 GLIAC) at the official halfway point of 2024. SVSU's sole draw came against then-No. 1 GVSU on Sept. 27 (0-0).

Madi Bajis 2023 Second Team All-GLIAC, Lauryn Fracassi, and Rileigh Garbarz lead the Cardinal's offensive attack with two goals each - Garbarz also maintains a team-high three assists. Lainey Garbarz has been the go-to keeper after starting and playing eight matches, the junior making 46 saves and allowing eight goals while posting five shutouts. Garbarz was recently named GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week (Week Four) after the undefeated outcome against the Lakers.

Roosevelt Matchup
As a former member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the Lakers' inaugural season at the NCAA DII level has been trivial as they continue fighting for their first win of 2024 (0-5-3, 0-4-1 GLIAC). Their only conference draw was in their recent outing at Wisconsin-Parkside on Oct. 4.

Not for a lack of effort, Paola Macias has logged two scores and an assist with a team-leading seven shots on net. Cami Butler and Kyra Cruickshank also recorded a goal, with Alex Creel adding an assist to the team's total (two overall). Roxy Herrera has been the priority in goal for the Lakers as the junior goalkeeper leads the conference with 52 total saves for a .693 save percentage.

Oct. 13 will be the first-ever matchup between Roosevelt and DU.
