Preview: Panthers host No. 2 Lakers for a single match week

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Slated for nothing but home contests over the next three-and-a-half weeks, Davenport University women's soccer will play just one match in week five as they host No. 1 Grand Valley State University.

The Panthers ended in draws against Wisconsin-Parkside (0-0) and Ferris State (1-1) on Sept. 27-29, DU looking for its first conference victory (0-0-2) with a 2-3-3 overall record.

Haley Diekevers leads the conference for shots per game (3.63) and remains in a first-place tie for game-winning goals (two), as Elizbeth Wolter's three shutouts this season ties her for second in the conference with her 27 saves being the fourth-most in the GLIAC.

With plenty of rest between their last outings and Oct. 6, the Panthers will look to make history against their crosstown opponent.

GVSU Matchup
The Lakers (6-0-2, 3-0-1 GLIAC) were the best-ranked team in the country after weeks two and three but fell to No. 2 this week after a scoreless draw at Saginaw Valley State (Sept. 27) and a 3-0 shutout at home against Parkside (Sept. 29).

Through eight contests, GVSU has defeated two top-10 opponents in No. 9 Ashland and No. 4 Central Missouri, the Lakers looking to return to the national tournament for the fourth straight year since the shortened 2020-21 season. Emma Chudik leads the Lakers with three goals with Taylor Reid's three assists marking the current team-high. Isabel Imes was the starting keeper for the first few contests of the season. However, Cailynn Junk has since taken over with six starts in seven appearances, making a team-high 19 saves for the second-best goals-against average in the conference at 0.52 overall.

The Lakers fell in the second round of the GLIAC Tournament last season while earning their 20th consecutive berth to the NCAA Tournament, where their national title hopes also fell short after a loss in the Elite Eight.

GVSU hosts Purdue Northwest on Oct. 4 and closes the weekend at DU for the 13th all-time matchup between the programs. Last year, the Lakers won all three meetings against the Panthers by a single goal (2-1, 2-1, 1-0) as DU looks to secure its first-ever victory against the long-time opponent.
