Panthers shut out Bulldogs to open the year undefeated

Box Score KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - Opening the year with a shutout, Davenport University women's soccer defeated Truman State in an impressive 2-0 road victory to improve to 1-0 on the season.

DU couldn't put a shot in goal in the first half after posting four attempts (two on target), but an aggressive defense held the Bulldogs to zero attempts with nine fouls to highlight the efforts as the scoreboard read 0-0 at halftime.

Fifteen minutes into the second half, DU received a free kick attempt after a foul deep outside the box set up a scoring opportunity. Taken by Gabby Scholten, the senior midfielder set up Haley Diekevers who sent a strike into the back right corner of the goal for DU's first of 2024. Eight minutes later, first-year transfer Alexis Martinez sent a cross over the box as true freshman Ella Chatfield blasted a header into the corner-left pocket for her first collegiate goal.

Diekevers picked up where she left off in 2023 as last season's leading scorer and is now one goal shy from tying for sixth overall in the all-time rankings. Elizabeth Wolter filled the goalkeeper duties, starting and playing all 90 minutes in her first-ever career game.

The Panthers will continue non-conference action in Quincy, Illinois, to face the Hawks on Sunday, Sept. 8 at 3:30 p.m. EST.
