Panthers Set for GLIAC Semifinal Clash at No. 1 Saginaw Valley State

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. Fresh off one of the most dramatic wins in program history, the Davenport Panthers are back in action and hungry for more. Following an 8–7 penalty shootout victory over Parkside, DU now turns its attention to No. 1 seed Saginaw Valley State in Friday's GLIAC Semifinal showdown.

The Cardinals, who earned a first-round bye as the No. 1 seed, will make their first postseason appearance of the 2025 campaign.

In their victory over Parkside, Davenport battled to a 2–2 draw through 90 minutes and double overtime before goalkeeper Beau Hudd made a clutch penalty-kick save to send the Panthers through to the next round and end the Rangers' season.

Davenport Outlook
The No. 5-seeded Panthers will look to rely on their statistical leaders and gritty team play in this semifinal matchup. Contributing to DU's quarterfinal success were Easton Lopez, who found the back of the net off assists from Drew Matyunas and Charlie Davis, and Max Wilhelm, who scored off a setup from Aidan Orth to help secure the 2–2 draw that led to the Panthers' dramatic penalty-kick win.

Looking back at the regular-season meetings between the two sides, Davenport fell to Saginaw Valley State by identical 2–0 scores on Sept. 24 and Oct. 29. In those matches, Maximilian Postlewait, Matyunas, and Henry Lopez were the only Panthers to record shots, combining for six total attempts across both contests.

Between the posts, Beau Hudd continues to be a difference-maker. In his two outings against the Cardinals this season, the sophomore keeper has made 18 saves on 56 shots faced. During the most recent matchup on Oct. 29, Hudd recorded a career-high 13 saves while facing a career-high 38 shots, showcasing his ability to keep DU competitive against one of the GLIAC's top offenses.

Offensively, Davis, Matyunas, Easton Lopez, and Aidan Orth have been the Panthers' most consistent creators, each registering 25 or more shots this season. The quartet will aim to keep the pressure on and grow those numbers in Friday's 11 a.m. semifinal matchup in University Center, Mich.

Saginaw Valley State Preview
The Cardinals (10–2–4 overall, 9–2–1 GLIAC) have been dominant throughout the 2025 campaign, with their only losses coming against Northern Michigan—a program Davenport defeated 3–1 earlier this season—and Parkside, who the Panthers topped in penalty kicks after drawing twice during the regular season. SVSU's only draw outside conference play came against Roosevelt.

Offensively, the Cardinals feature a deep lineup with multiple threats. Matty Telfer (43 shots), Lui Ingavi (40), Evan Baker (36), and Adrian Hatman (32) have combined for 151 of SVSU's conference-leading 306 total shots. For comparison, Davenport ranks second in the GLIAC with 260 shots, led by freshman standout Charlie Davis with 52. Eoin Farrell leads the Cardinals in goals with 7, followed closely by Telfer with 5. Together, Farrell and Telfer have contributed nearly 30 points, with Farrell collecting 15 and Telfer 14, highlighting their consistent offensive impact.

In goal, Nick Kay has been a defensive anchor, leading the GLIAC with a 0.628 goals-against average. He's posted 34 saves, allowed just 10 goals, and ranks second in the conference with seven shutouts, holding a 10–2–4 record on the season.
