ROMEOVILLE, Ill. — Davenport's women's basketball squad fell just short in a six-point loss to Lewis on Thursday night. After overcoming a slow start, the Panthers steadily took control through the middle stages of the first half. Trailing 10–2 early, Davenport responded with a 10–1 run to close the opening quarter, highlighted by an
Ellie Toney three in the final seconds that pushed DU ahead 12–11. The Panthers carried that momentum into the second quarter, outscoring Lewis 12–8 and building a 24–19 halftime lead behind strong rebounding, active team defense, and timely perimeter shooting.
Lewis countered in the third, using interior scoring and second-chance opportunities to chip away at DU's advantage. Despite baskets from Kayla Covington, Maddie Geers, and Toney, the Flyers pulled even late in the frame as both teams entered the fourth tied. In the final quarter, Lewis' defense tightened, holding Davenport to seven points while converting key plays in transition and at the free throw line to pull away.
Senior forward Toney delivered a strong performance, finishing with a game-high 16 points, 10 rebounds, two assists, and three made threes in 35 minutes. Geers added six points, six rebounds, and two blocks, while Maya Mitchell matched her six boards and added four points. Anna Axtell and Covington each chipped in six points as well.
Defensively, the Panthers produced a strong effort, collecting eight steals, three blocks, and holding Lewis to 2-of-17 from three while battling nearly even on the glass.
Lewis was paced by Ally Cesarini's 15 points and Yahaira Bueno's 12, including several key baskets during the Flyers' second-half push.
The Panthers will now turn their attention to Saturday, November 22, when they host the Tiffin University Dragons at 1 PM in Grand Rapids, marking DU's first home contest of the 2025 non-conference season.
