Davenport University Appoints Dominic Damon as Head Women’s Wrestling Coach

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Davenport University is proud to announce the appointment of Dominic Damon as the new Head Coach of the Women's Wrestling team. Damon, who has served as the interim head coach at Northern Michigan University since January 2025, brings a dynamic blend of athletic experience, leadership, and a commitment to athlete development.

A cum laude graduate of NMU with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science, Damon has deep ties to the sport of wrestling, both as a former student-athlete and as an assistant coach. His tenure as Assistant Women's Wrestling Coach began in September 2024, during which he quickly demonstrated exceptional skill in practice planning, recruiting, and team leadership, leading to his appointment as interim head coach earlier this year.

"Damon comes from a rich background of wrestling experience both as a student-athlete and as a coach," said Paul Lowden, Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at DU. "He brings to the table high standards and a strong vision in helping to build a program the right way. We are confident that his strong work ethic and his passion for being an advocate for women's wrestling will help in creating a strong foundation for our program."

In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Damon holds multiple coaching certifications from USA Wrestling, including Copper, Bronze, and Teal levels. His coaching journey began with volunteer work at the Seattle Wrestling Club from 2016 to 2019, laying the foundation for a career driven by mentorship and performance.

"I'm extremely excited to be selected as the Head Coach of Women's Wrestling at Davenport," said Damon. "First and foremost I want to express my gratitude to Coach Scott Lucas, Ronda Varnesdeel, Melanie Loughin, Paul Lowden, Walter O'Neill, and everyone else that was involved in the hiring process. I'm honored to join the Panther family and lead our Women's Wrestling team. Coach Lucas has done an incredible job leading the program thus far and has laid the perfect foundation for us to grow into a team that can compete at the highest level. With the first-ever NCAA Championships in Women's Wrestling being held this coming season it is bound to be an extremely competitive and exciting year and I will make sure our women are ready for any and all of the challenges that will come their way."

Dominic Damon's appointment signals a new chapter for DU Women's Wrestling, with a focus on competitiveness, culture, and community.
