GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The women's ACHA hockey team was able to pick up a win and tie over the weekend against cross-town rival Aquinas College. The Panthers have been playing with a small bench as nine skaters made up the lineup, but that did not stop Davenport from getting a 4-2 win on Friday and a 1-1 tie on Saturday. The Saints were able to take the shootout, but the official result is a tie in the league standings.
Davenport had a total of 38 shots on goal in the road contest at Southside Ice Arena on Friday night.
Kacie Stolarek scored her first Panther goal at 30 seconds of the first period with
Mika Kulynych on the assist.
Ainsley Skinner made it 2-0 at 6:35 of the second period for her first goal of the season with an assist from
Gabby Basha.
After Aquinas made it 2-1 in the second period, Stolarek increased the lead to 3-1 with her second goal of the game at 3:20 of the third period. Basha's first goal of the season at 7:08 gave DU a comfortable 4-1 lead. The Saints did add a late goal at 17:44, but never challenged the Panthers to overtake the game.
Avery Hall made 26 saves in net for the Panthers in the win.
The opportunities to score for Davenport on Saturday at Patterson Ice Center were largely stopped by great goaltending by Aquinas' Lila Dial. She made 40 saves on the day compared to 29 for Hall of the Panthers. Stolarek continued her stellar series by putting DU ahead 1-0 at 12:06 of the second period from
Ainsley Skinner. The Saints would tie it up at the 15:07 mark of the second as Anna Castle scored her first goal of the season. The game went into overtime as DU did put five shots on goal in the extra session compared to two for Aquinas.
The Panthers are back on the ice on Thursday, Oct. 2 at Yost Ice Arena in Ann Arbor to face the University of Michigan's ACHA squad beginning at 8:00 PM.
