GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After a milestone 2024 season that saw the program reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time in three years, the Davenport University men's soccer team is set to launch the 2025 campaign. The Panthers open on Thursday, Sept. 4, under the lights at Ohio Dominican with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff, before returning home to host Thomas More on Saturday for Alumni Day at DU.
Coming off nine victories last fall—their highest total since 2021—the Panthers enter the new year ranked fourth in the GLIAC Preseason Coaches Poll. Head coach Chris Hughes, now in his 14th season, will rely on a balanced roster that blends veteran leadership with fresh talent. Among the returners is standout Easton Lopez, the 2024 GLIAC Freshman of the Year and First Team All-GLIAC selection, who headlines a core group expected to carry the momentum forward alongside a strong class of newcomers.
Ohio Dominican MatchupÂ
The Davenport Panthers will square off with the Ohio Dominican Panthers in the 2025 season opener for both programs. This marks just the second meeting in series history, with the first dating back to 2011 when DU earned a 2-1 victory.
A member of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC), Ohio Dominican is coming off a 2024 campaign in which they finished 3-12-2. Head Coach Willy Merrick enters his 21st year with the program—and 18th as head coach—while welcoming back eight seniors to the squad.
Thomas More Matchup
Davenport's last meeting with Thomas More came just a year ago, when the Panthers secured a 2-1 victory.
Thomas More, a member of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC), looks to build on its 2024 campaign that ended with an 8-9-3 record and a run in the conference tournament. With both teams opening the year earlier in the week - Thomas More against GLIAC foe Roosevelt and Davenport against Ohio Dominican - this matchup marks just the second contest of the 2025 season for each side.
