GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport women's basketball team dropped a 73-68 decision against Parkside on Thursday (Feb. 12) at the DU Student Center. The Rangers completed the season sweep over the Panthers and got balanced scoring as all five starters hit double figures.
Davenport did not lead in the contest and found themselves down 7-0 to start the game.
Ellie Toney got the first points for DU, but it did not come until 5:26 left in the first quarter. DU trailed 10-2 at the media timeout as Peighton Nelson made a three-pointer at the 4:02 mark. The Rangers closed out the quarter ahead 17-9.
UWP extended the lead to 28-15 at the 7:13 mark of the second quarter. The Panthers began to slowly cut into the deficit and trailed 32-25 at the media timeout after a
Maddie Geers triple. The Panthers got to within 34-31 as Neveah Williams hit a jumper with
Tangee Gagau on the assist at 1:06. The Rangers got it back to a 39-33 halftime lead as Williams scored her 10th point of the game on a floater.
Parkside shot 43.3 percent in the first half and went 10-of-14 at the foul line. The Panthers shot it well at 48.1 percent, including 11-of-15 in the hot second quarter. Geers had 14 points at the break going 6-of-8 from the floor.
Parkside came out strong in the third quarter and scored the first eight points for a 47-33 lead at the 8:06 mark. Davenport trimmed the lead to 49-43 at the 2:09 mark on a Williams layup to give her 14 points. UWP led 54-46 at the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, DU got it down to 58-55 at the 6:48 mark on a pull-up jumper by Williams. The Panthers were down one twice and found themselves within one possession at 70-68 as Toney scored with six seconds left and Parkside called a timeout. Alli Hampel was fouled with two seconds left and missed the first free throw, but made the second. DU inbounded but it was stolen and then Cassidy Arni canned two free throws to end the game at 73-68.
Geers led the Panthers with 22 points and tied her season high set in the season opener at Walsh. Williams netted a season-high 21 points in 40 minutes and also had six rebounds and four assists. Toney was the third Panther to score double digits with 16 and she also had a team-high eight rebounds.
