Davenport Tops 80 for First Time in Over a Year

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. — Davenport produced its highest scoring output in more than a year Saturday afternoon but could not overcome a difficult first quarter in a 96-82 loss to Saginaw Valley State at James E. O'Neill Jr. Arena.

The Panthers finished with 82 points, their highest total since an 85-79 victory over Purdue Northwest on February 15, 2025. Entering the contest averaging just 60.5 points per game, the offensive performance marked a significant step for DU. However, SVSU answered with a season-high 96 points despite averaging just 61.8 in conference play.

Nevaeh Williams led the Panthers with a career-high 28 points, delivering one of her most complete performances in her collegiate career. Williams attacked in transition, converted at the free-throw line and knocked down timely perimeter shots to help fuel Davenport's offensive surge.

DU looked to establish its presence inside early, scoring 14 points in the paint during the opening quarter. Maddie Geers converted multiple layups, while Williams added a fast-break three-pointer to keep the Panthers within striking distance. The Cardinals, however, found its rhythm from beyond the arc, connecting on six three-pointers in the first quarter to build a 35-19 lead.

SVSU extended the margin in the second quarter behind efficient shooting and steady paint production. Williams remained aggressive offensively, adding a layup and two free throws, while Geers and Ellie Toney each contributed baskets. Still, Davenport entered halftime trailing 58-33.

The Panthers responded with their strongest stretch of the day in the third quarter, erupting for 30 points. Anna Axtell opened the half with a three-pointer following a steal and assist from Williams. Toney added a three-point play, and Williams continued to push the tempo, scoring in transition and attacking the rim. Davenport trimmed the deficit to 75-63 by the end of the period.

DU continued to pressure in the fourth quarter, shooting 7-of-19 from the field and committing zero turnovers over the final 10 minutes. Williams and Toney each connected on key baskets as the Panthers attempted to close the gap, but Saginaw Valley maintained enough separation to secure the 96-82 victory.

While the loss tightens the GLIAC tournament race, Davenport's offensive breakout — highlighted by Williams' career night — provides momentum heading into the final week of the regular season. The Panthers will need at least one win next week to remain in postseason contention as they battle closely with Saginaw Valley and Lake Superior State in the standings.
