No. 2 GVSU Pulls Away from Davenport in Crosstown Showdown

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Davenport dropped an 87-52 decision to No. 2-ranked Grand Valley State (26-1, 18-1 GLIAC) Tuesday night inside the DU Student Center as part of the Crosstown Showdown.

The Lakers, who clinched at least a share of the GLIAC regular-season title with the win, controlled the glass throughout, outrebounding the Panthers 51-26 and converting 20 offensive rebounds into key second-chance opportunities.

Davenport jumped out to a quick 5-2 lead behind a three from Ellie Toney and a mid-range jumper by Nevaeh Williams before Grand Valley State answered with a run to seize control. Toney's triple marked part of her push toward a milestone, as she now sits just 12 points shy of 1,000 for her career.

The teams were tied at seven midway through the first quarter before GVSU used its interior presence and second-chance scoring to close the period on a 6-2 run, taking a 19-14 lead into the second.

Reese Polega connected from deep at the 6:11 mark of the second quarter off a Toney assist, but the Lakers responded with an 8-0 run to push their advantage to double digits. GVSU carried a 42-24 lead into halftime behind efficient shooting and dominance in the paint.

Anna Axtell provided a bright spot early in the third quarter with a fast-break jumper, and Toney later drilled another three off a Kayla Covington assist to trim the deficit. However, another Laker surge extended the margin beyond 20, and the Panthers trailed 63-39 heading into the final frame.

Polega opened the fourth quarter with a layup, and Tangee Gagau added a three-pointer midway through the period. Williams scored five late points, but the Lakers maintained control down the stretch, sealing the 87-52 victory.
