Grand Rapids, Mich. - After an up and down 2007 campaign, the Panthers men's soccer team opened up a season full of question marks with an impressive 4-0 victory over Trinity International.
After graduating many key players from a year ago, the Panthers faced many questions heading into this season. But the senior leadership from reigning WHAC Player of the Year Tony Deakin and 1st Team All-WHAC performer Efrain Hernandez was evident in the opening game against Trinity International.
DU opened the scoring in the first half as Deakin took a ball off of a Trinity defender and flipped it past the keeper for his first goal of the season. David Wood then took two beautiful passes from Chris Allen and Elfid Kovacevic and put it past the keeper to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead at halftime.
The Panthers kept the pressure on the Trinity defense in the closing half as Efrain Hernandez would post his first goal of the season and freshman Rory Scott notched his first goal in his DU career.
DU improves to 1-0 on the year and will travel to Indiana this weekend to take on two very tough MCC opponents in Taylor University and Indiana Wesleyan in the Taylor Tournament.
