GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - DU fell victim tonight to the reigning WHAC Freshman of the Year as she led her 25th ranked Warriors to a 3-set win over the Panthers. The loss, which is the third straight for Davenport, drops them to 9-11 on the year and 3-4 in WHAC play.
Indiana Tech entered tonight's match coming off a big win against #10 Madonna earlier in the week and they carried that momentum to a three-set win over Davenport.
DU jumped out to an early 7-6 lead in the opening set after an attack error from the Warriors, but Tech then ran off 10 of the next 12 points to take full control at 16-9. DU did manage to fight back and got to within three points after another error from the Warriors but IIT finished DU off 25-21.
Set two was a back and forth affair for each team as neither team held a lead of larger than two until the Warriors pulled way to lead 15-12. DU then ran off two straight points on kills from Kelse Moon (Fremont, Mich.) but again the Warriors were too tough as they posted a 25-21 win for the second straight set.
After the 10 minute break in between sets, DU came out a little more energized with the match on the line and took an early 4-3 lead on a kill from Ashley Penny (New Hudson, Mich.).
The Panthers went back and forth with the Warriors for the next few points but they would take their final lead at 7-6 on a service error from Indiana Tech and then watched the Warriors run off 13 of the next 17 points to trail 20-11. Amy VanEns (Lowell, Mich.) ended the rally with a kill but Tech closed out DU 25-14.
The Panthers' offense hit just .170 on the night compared to .289 for the Warriors and DU also managed just 29 digs on the night as Tech finished with 42 kills in three sets.
Kassie Graves (White Cloud, Mich.) led DU with 11 kills on the night as Kayla Vandermolen (Cedar Springs, Mich.) dished out 28 assists.
The Panthers head to Marion, Ind. this weekend to take part in the Wildcat Tourney hosted by Indiana Wesleyan University.
