WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The hot start to the Panthers 2009 Baseball season continues as DU posted two wins over Augustana College (IL) today to improve to 7-0 on the year. Davenport will now take on Gannon University on Friday.
In game one, Andy Westerburg pitched an outstanding game as the freshman went six innings while only giving up two hits and one earned run. Westerburg also struck out seven of the 20 batters he faced.
After scoring a run in the of the 3rd inning, Davenport tacked on two more in the top of the fourth when Derrick Gentile drove home the first run and then later scored when Tim McNair reached on an error by the Augustana pitcher.
Davenport got their final runs of the game in their half of the 7th as Mitch Pike and Bryan Spykerman each came across the dish to put the game out of reach. Jarrett Luyk finished the game off strong as he pitched the final inning while giving up one hit and striking out one.
In game two, it was all about the Davenport hitters as they collected 12 hits on 33 at-bats.
Joe Freist finished the game 3-4 with 3 RBI and James Folske and Joe Hill each collected two hits apiece. Mitch Pike also drove in two runs and Matt Collins drove in three.
Ryan Lind got the start for the Panthers on the mound as he pitched four solid innings while giving up only one run and striking out two.
The two wins give the Panthers a three game sweep of Augustana on the trip as they will now take aim at former GLIAC foe Gannon University on Friday afternoon.
