WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - A sketchy 9th inning almost turned bad, but the Panthers held on for their 8th straight win as they defeated Gannon University in Winter Haven Friday afternoon. Davenport will take on Evangel and Point Park on Saturday.
After giving up a run in the top of the first, Davenport responded by bringing runs across the plate in the next three innings highlighted by three in the 2nd, and two in the third.
They would tack on three more un the 7th and 8th as they built a 9-3 lead heading into the final three outs. Unfortunately, those did not come easy but Nick DePender got the final three outs for the Panthers victory.
David Stuppy, Tim McNair and Brian Spykerman each collected two hits on the day and Derrick Gentile joined Stuppy and McNair in driving in two runs apiece.
Josh Freist picked up his first ever win as he went five innings while allowing three runs on five hits and striking out two.
Davenport will take on fellow NAIA opponents Evangel and Point Park on Saturday before a double-header with Point Park on Sunday,
