Five Runs in First Three Innings Lift Panthers to 6-4 Win over Goshen

March 20, 2009

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. - Davenport jumped out to a 5-2 lead after just three innings on Thursday afternoon and they hung on to win 6-4 against Goshen College. The win, in the first of six weekend games for DU, lifts them to 18-4 on the year.

The Panthers got one run in the top half of the first inning before seeing the host Maple Leafs put up two of their own in the bottom half. The bats really started to click in the second as Ryan Lind came home on a single by Tim McNair. Pitch Pike then scored the second run to give DU the lead as David Stuppy got the RBI.

The third inning was much of the same for the Panthers as they again plated two runs as Joe Freist and Brian Spykerman each came across the dish.

Greg Bartlett then made his first appearance of the year after an off-season injury forced him to miss the first part of the season. Greg ended up getting the win in his debut as DU held off a late charge from Goshen.

Bobby Kwekel remained solid out of the bullpen and the freshman picked up his third save of the year.

DU will take on Trine University (formerly Tri-State) today at 3:00 PM before heading to Ohio to take on Ohio Northern in double-header action on Saturday. The Panthers will end their road trip with two games at Marian College (IN) on Sunday.
