Game 1 Box Score Game 2 Box Score
LIVONIA. Mich. - In a makeup game from both Sunday and yesterday, DU dropped both games to Madonna with the Crusaders winning 9-4 and 2-1. The two losses ends the season series between the top two teams in the WHAC as DU now stands at 21-11 on the year and 1-3 in the WHAC.
Game one was all about the second inning for Davenport and after they got on top with a run from Ryan Lind on a bases loaded walk, it quickly turned ugly in the bottom half as they gave up a season high 8 runs as the Crusaders took control of the game. The Panthers did manage to get one back in the top of the third but again the Madonna hitters proved to be too tough and they extended their lead to 9-2.
While not giving up, DU came out strong in the final inning as Matt Collins got things started with a single that was followed by another from Joe Freist. Brian Spykerman then drove Collins home on a fielder's choice and later scored on on a ground out by Derrick Gentile. That would be the last of the DU runs for the game as they fell 9-4.
Game two was dominated by the pitchers as both Wesley Trimpe and the Crusaders hurler were dominant. The two pitchers combined to allow only 9 hits in the game and Trimpe was on fire allowing only one hit through the first five innings.
It came down to a tough 6th inning for the freshman though as Madonna finally got a rally going by getting their leadoff hitter on and the defending WHAC Player of the Year broke the scoreless game after an intentional walk and a few stolen bases. MU would add a second run to take a 2-0 lead going into the 7th inning.
Davenport came back strong in the top of the 7th as James Folske got on board with a single and later scored on a ball put into play by Brian Spykerman. However that would be all of the rally as DU could not get the tying run across the plate.
The two losses drop Davenport to 21-11 on the year and 1-3 in WHAC play. The Panthers will host MCC-foe University of St. Francis (IN) in a double-header tomorrow afternoon beginning at 2:00 PM. Game two will immediately follow at Sullivan Field.
