GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Lady Panthers Softball team picked up their first WHAC win today as they defeated Concordia University 8-0 in game one and fell 3-4 in the second. The win in game one which featured a no-hitter by Karlee Despres, also ended a 9-game skid for DU as the split leaves DU 16-17 on the year and 1-9 in the WHAC.

In game one, the Panthers started the game determined to pick up their first win in league play and the bats came alive in the second when Kassi Johnson drove home Katie Cornman to put DU up 1-0.

Davenport would pour it on in the bottom of the 3rd as Ali Dawson picked up the first homerun at home for DU knocking in Jodi Steenwyk. Three more Lady Panthers crossed the plate in the third as Cornman, Karlee Despres and Kristin Miedema all came across the dish.

Davenport then tacked on two more runs in the 4th as Karlee Despres was dominant on the mound throwing the first no-hitter in Davenport Softball history. The freshman hurler finished the game with two strikeouts in the game as well.

Game two started with Concordia picking up their first hit of the day and the Cardinals would eventually bring her around to take a 1-0 lead. The bats for Davenport struggled in the opening inning but Davenport loaded the bases in both the 2nd and 3rd innings but could not come up with the big hit to drive across a run.

Concordia tacked on one more run in the top of the third, fifth and seventh innings to take a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh and that was when the DU bats came alive. With two runners on, Jodi Steenwyk hit a three run homerun to bring DU to within one but the Cardinals pitcher was able to get out of it winning 4-3.

The split gives Davenport a 16-17 overall record and they are now 1-9 in WHAC play. They will host Siena Heights on Saturday beginning at 1:00 PM.
