LIVONIA, Mich. - Davenport's softball team posted one of the biggest wins in the program's short history today as they posted a 3-2 victory over #17 Madonna in game one before falling 5-3 in the second game. The split in Livonia leaves DU at 22-19 on the year and they are now 7-11 in league play.

Game one was dominated by the two pitcher but the DU hitters were able to hit three long balls which resulted in the teams' first win over a ranked opponent in school history.

Madonna scored an early run in the bottom of the first, and then added a second in the 4th to lead 2-0 heading into the 5th.  Cora Miller broke the shutout with a solo homerun in the top of the fifth but DU still trailed heading into their final at-bat.

Leadoff hitter Katie Cornman then went deep with her own solo shot to tie the game to send it into extra innings. After an opening strikeout in the top of the 8th, Haley Stehouwer hit a line drive homerun off the scoreboard to give DU their first lead of the game and Karlee Despres closed out the Madonna hitters in the bottom half for the 3-2 win.

The win lifted Despres to 8-6 on the year as the freshman struck out 11 while allowing only five hits on the day.

Game two was very similar to the first as all of the scoring for Davenport happened on homeruns, this time a three run shot by Kristin Miedema in the top of the fourth after Madonna had taken a 2-0 lead. Unfortunately, the Panthers were unable to hold onto the lead as the Crusaders posted a three run inning late to win 5-3.

Ali Dawson took the loss to fall to 4-4 on the year as she joined Cora Miller in posting two hits from the plate.

The split gives DU a nice momentum swing heading into a big three day stretch that will see Davenport take on Aquinas on Tuesday and then follow with two straight days against Cornerstone on Wednesday and Thursday. All double-headers are scheduled to begin at 4:00 PM.
