GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport University Lady Panthers traveled across town this afternoon to face WHAC opponent Cornerstone University. DU split the double header (1-3, 9-0) leaving tomorrow's two contests to decide the winner of the season series.

The first game of the day began slowly as both pitchers found ways to stay out of trouble and keep the batters on their toes. The home team struck first as they scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth leaving the Panthers some offensive ground to make up.

Kristin Miedema would be the Panther to get DU on the board as she brought Karlee Despres across the plate in the top of the sixth to bring Davenport within one. With new found momentum, the Panthers looked to gain a quick three and out to get the bats back at home plate, but Cornerstone would answer and go yard in the bottom of the sixth leaving DU down by two heading into their final three outs in regulation.

Davenport made some noise in the final inning, but they stranded two runners on base as they dropped game one of the day 3-1, leaving Karlee Despres with an 8-7 record.

Game two would offer some resistance from mother nature as a cold rain began to fall early, but that did not hinder the DU bats as they scored five runs in the their first at bat off a pair of home runs from Kristina Krum and Katie Cornman.

As the sun began to shine, the Panther offense kept churning, scoring two more runs in both the third and fourth innings leaving the score at 9-0 in favor of the visitors. Cornerstone would be unsuccessful as they tried to deactivate the mercy rule in the bottom of the fifth, giving Davenport and Ali Dawson the game two win.

The split sets Davenport's overall record at 23-20 and 8-12 in WHAC play. The Panthers will look for two more wins as they host Cornerstone for the double header tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00pm.
