LIVONIA, Mich. - Davenport used a big comeback win in the first of two elimination games on Saturday to down Aquinas 4-3, but then fell victim to a hot Crusaders offense as they end their season with an overall mark of 32-23.
In the first game of the day against Aquinas College that was played at Concordia University, Davenport posted three runs in their final at-bat to defeat the Saints and end their season.
Joe Hill got things started on the first pitch of the bottom of the first when the centerfielder sent it over the fence to tie the game after the Saints got on the board first in the top half against DU starter Tucker Gernhard.
That would be all of the scoring until Aquinas struck again in the top of the 6th when they took a 3-1 lead and it would hold up until DU came to bat in their final chance to extend their season. Ryan Lind singled to open the inning and it was followed by a single by Tommy Greer.
Mitch Pike then reached on a fielders choice and a Saints errors allowed the first run to come across. Joe Hill followed with hid second RBI of the game to bring home Greer and James Folske was then walked to load the bases with still nobody out.
Matt Collins stepped to the played and singled through the right side to bring home Pike that turned out to be the game winner.
Game two was a completely different story for the Panthers and after a scoreless first at bat, Madonna came up in the bottom half and unleashed five runs on DU starter Brandon Romero. Things got even worse in the second innning as Andy Westerburg could not stop the bleeding and MU put up 10 more runs to lead by 15 after two innings. The Crusaders then tacked on seven more runs in the third to take a commanding 22-1 lead.
Davenport did start to battle back though as they finished the game with 15 hits led by Matt Collins and Tim McNair who each posted three hits. Chris Sanchez was the only other Panther to post a multi-hit game as McNair and Collins each drove in a pair of runs.
The 29-7 loss ends the inaugural season for Davenport with an overall record of 23-23.
