KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The D3 hockey team was unable to recover from an early 2-0 deficient against Florida Gulf Coast to fall 4-2 in their first game of the Tennessee Tournament last night. The Panthers are now 5-2 on the year and will continue tournament play tonight.
Florida Gulf Coast attacked early in the game with two goals in the first period against the DU defense. Davenport would answer back in the early minutes of the second period with a goal by
Zack Feher (Livonia, Mich.) from
Jordan Steger (Caledonia, Mich.) and
Taylor Keyworth (Grand Rapids, Mich.).
With the lead cut to just one, Florida Gulf Coast would add a power play goal six minutes later to give them the 3-1 lead.
Mike Soto (Muskegon, Mich.) would then cut the lead back to one with an unassisted top shelf goal four minutes later to send the Panthers into the locker room down 3-2.
Both team's defenses would play solid in the third. Down by a goal Davenport would pull their goalie
John Cruse (Shelby Twp, Mich.) with one minute left to try and tie the game. Unfortunately Florida Gulf Coast would capitalize on the open net with a last second across ice goal to seal the 4-2 victory over the Panthers.
The loss is only the second of the year for DU who will look to rebound tonight when they take on Loyola University. Game time is set for 11:00pm in Knoxville, Tenn.
