MIDLAND, Mich. – The D3 hockey team completed its weekend sweep of Northwood University with a 7-2 victory on Saturday afternoon. Behind
Justin Welker's hat trick the Panthers are now 8-3 overall and 2-0 in MCHC play.
During the first ten minutes of the game both teams would remain scoreless until Northwood was able to score the first goal of the game. It would only take twenty second for the Panthers to even the score back up to 1-1 with
Justin Welker (Speedway, Ind.) first goal of the night from
Taylor Keyworth (Grand Rapids, Mich.). Keyworth would then turn around and add a goal himself with fourteen seconds left in the period.
Up 2-1, the Davenport offense would explode with five goals in the period.
Sam Waldhart (Walker, Mich.)would start the 2
nd period scoring with a power play goal three minutes in. Welker would add a shorthanded goal next and
Norm Farr (Jenison, Mich.) another power play goal three minutes later. Twenty seconds later
Jordan Steger (Caledonia, Mich.) would add his first goal of the night, with Welker completing his hat trick before the end of the period to put Davenport up 7-2.
DU's offense would cool down in the third but
Tim Davis (Grand Rapids, Mich.) would continue to dominate in net for Panthers allowing just two goals on the night and a scoreless third period.
Davenport will continue MCHC action on Friday, October 29 against Lansing Community College. Game time is set for 8:00pm in Lansing, Mich.
