GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The D3 hockey team suffered its first loss of the season on Friday night after giving up five goals in the third period to fall 7-1 to Saginaw Valley State University. The Panthers are now 4-1 on year and haven't started league play yet.
The first period was a physical back and forth game. After an early goal from the Cardinals the Panthers would tie the game back up 1-1 off a goal from Jake Williams (Jenison, Mich.) who would shoot just in front of the blue line and place the puck in the top left corner of the net off a cross ice pass from Mike Soto.
The tie would not last for long when SVSU would add a goal at the end of the period to go up 2-1 heading into the second. The score would remain 2-1 after the second period as the Panthers had plenty of opportunities to tie the game back up but could not put the puck in the net.
In the opening minutes of the third period SVSU would take over the game as they would score two goals in the first five minutes of the period and add three more by the time the buzzer would ring at the end of the game.
Matt Sekosan (Sterling Heights, Mich.) would get the loss in net for DU as the Panthers would fall 7-1 for the first time this season.
Davenport will be back in action at Patterson Ice Center on Sunday, October 10th when they take on Muskegon Community College for a 9:00am start.
