Box Score
AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Brandon Romero struck out 10 batters and finished with a complete game shutout in the first of two with Point Park as the Panthers finished with a split on their final day in Florida. After the 11-0 win and 9-0 loss, DU comes back to Michigan with a record of 5-6.
After completing only one game the previous day against William Penn, the Panthers returned to the field today to take on Point Park in a double-header at Lake Myrtle Park.
Senior captain Brandon Romero was dominating in the first game as he struck out 10 batters while allowing only six hits as he lifted the Panthers to the 11-0 win.
Davenport did their damage in the middle innings as they scored four in the 3rd, one in the 4th, four more in the 5th and capped it off with two in the 6th.
Mitch Pike (Rockford, Mich.) got things started in the bottom of the third with a single that was followed by three more singles by Jason Pierce (Big Rapids, Mich.), James Folske (Mt Pleasant, Mich.) and Matt Collins (Akron, Ohio).
All four Panthers came home during the inning to lead 4-0. Pierce would score his second run of the game in the bottom of the fourth before DU put up four more in the 5th as the Point Park pitching faltered a little.
The second game was exactly the opposite in terms of the score as Point Park used some timely hitting to post a 9-0 victory.
Jesse Schneider (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) was decent on the mound in the complete game as he allowed 11 hits and three walks but the junior did manage to strike out 10 batters. DU was unable to avoid the big inning from PP, as their opponent scored seven runs in just two innings.
Offensively, Davenport's bats went quiet in their final game of the Florida trip as they mustered only three hits by Joe Hill (Tecumseh, Mich.), Austin Licon (Rockford, Ill.) and Derrick Gentile (Sturgis, Mich.).
The loss sends DU to 5-6 on the year as they will come back to Michigan on Monday. The Panthers will travel to Tennessee and Kentucky this weekend to take on Martin Methodist and Lindsey Wilson.
