Bats Go Quiet as Davenport Falls to Alma 4-0

March 24, 2010

Box Score

ALMA, Mich. - The bats continued to be silent today as the Panthers fell in non-conference action to host Alma College. Davenport, who is now 7-13 on the year, posted only four hits in the game but will look to rebound when they travel to Kalamazoo on March 29 to take on NCAA D1 Western Michigan.

After being swept by perennial NAIA power Cumberland University over the weekend, DU returned to Michigan only to see their bats stay quiet in the 4-0 loss to the Scots.

Tucker Gernhard (Stafford, Va.) got the start on the mound today and threw a pretty solid 5.1 innings while giving up four runs (3 earned) on just four hits. The senior southpaw struck out four batters but had three walks and two hit-batsmen.

After Alma brought across two runs in the first two innings, each team's offense was very quiet other than a couple of Panther runners in the top of the third.

DU did try and mount a comeback in the top of the fifth after senior Mitch Pike (Rockford, Mich.) doubled down the right field line and it was followed by a David Stuppy (Dowagiac, Mich.) single. A pick-off, strikeout and groundout would end the rally for the Panthers.

Unfortunately, that would be all of the action for the remainder of the game as the Alma pitching proved too tough.

DU got hits from Pike, Stuppy, James Folske (Mt, Pleasant, Mich.) and Brian Spykerman (Anaheim, Calif.) in the game.

DU (7-13) will travel to Kalamazoo on Monday to take on Western Michigan University before finally hosting their first game of the season on March 30 against MCC foe Goshen College.
