Davenport Outscores Cornerstone 15-1 in Doubleheader Sweep

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Davenport got back on the winning track today as they swept visiting Cornerstone 7-1 and 8-0 in five innings. The Lady Panthers are now 29-11 on the year and will take on rival Aquinas College at Northview HS on Saturday beginning at 1:00 PM.

Looking to rebound from a tough two-game series against Indiana Tech, Davenport scored 15 unanswered runs in two games to improve to 8-4 in the WHAC.

After the Golden Eagles got a run in the top of the first inning of game one, it was all Davenport from the bottom half on.

Haley Stehouwer (Wyoming, Mich.) opened the DU offense with a walk and later came around to score on a sac fly from Kristin Miedema (Newaygo, Mich.). DU tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the 3rd to lead 5-0 after three.

The 4-run inning was started by a single from Morgan Greenfield (Wyoming, Mich.) and after a fielder's choice left Heather Brusokas (Glendale, Calif.) on base, Miedema hit a two-run shot to left center. Karlee Despres (Belmont, Mich.) and Kelsey Egyhazi (Mishawaka, Ind.) would also score in the inning.

Davenport later added a single run in each of the 5th and 6th innings to give full support for starting pitcher Sam Cole (Belleville, Mich.) who picked up her 14th win of the year. Cole finished with 7.0IP, 6H, 1ER and 7K's.

The second game was all Davenport from start to finish as the Panthers put up four in the first and finished CU off with two runs in the 3rd and 4th innings for the final outcome of 8-0.

Ashlee Olsen (Rockford, Mich.) collected the first of nine Davenport hits on the game and she was followed by a single from Brusokas and Miedema. After a few sloppy plays from the Cornerstone defense, Nikki Aldricj (Robinson, Ill.) connected on a 2RBI double to put DU up 4-0 after one inning.

Karlee Despres then led off the 3rd inning with a single and Nikki Aldrich brought her home on a two-out single. Chelsey Dow (Lake Odessa, Mich.) picked up her second hit of the game while knocking in Aldrich as DU led 6-0.

Cornerstone did finally get their first hit of the game in the top of the fourth but DU pitcher Brianna Carpenter (Irvine, Calif.) was solid on the mound finishing with just the one hit allowed.

Davenport tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth and then got a 1-2-3 inning from Carpenter in the top of the fifth for an 8-0 win in 5-innings. Carpenter finished with a 1-hit shutout to gain her 10th win of the 2010 season.

The two wins lift DU to 29-11 on the year and 8-4 in league play. Davenport will travel to Aquinas (Northview HS) on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 PM.
