KENTWOOD, Mich. - Concordia used some timely hitting today and strong pitching to sweep the doubleheader from Davenport 4-3 and 11-7. The two losses and three of four in the weekend series leaves DU at 17-23 on the year and 6-10 in the WHAC.
After winning game one on Friday in Ann Arbor 12-2, the Davenport offense was quieted with a 2-1 loss and followed it up with only three more runs on eight hits in the first game today.
Jarrett Luyk (Hudsonville, Mich.) was solid over the first four innings as the sophomore allowed a run in the opening inning, but then shut down the Cardinals for the next three. Luyk was chased by the Concordia offense after the 5th and it was all the offense the visiting team would need to post the 4-3 win.
Davenport did threaten with a late comeback in two of the final three innings. The Panthers got two runs in the 5th as Matt Collins (Akron, Ohio) drove home Rob Bolster (Blissfield, Mich.) and Matt McNeil (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) drove home James Folske (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.).
DU added a third run in the 6th inning when Mitch Pike (Rockford, Mich.) scored on an RBI Sac fly from Bolster. That would be all of the scoring for the Panthers though as Concordia escaped with the one run win.
Game two was much more of an offensive battle as the teams combined for 18 runs on 24 hits. The defense was sub par for each team as well and it hurt the most in the latter parts of the game for the host Panthers.
Davenport got off to a great start with a 3-run first inning as both Austin Licon (Rockford, Ill.) and Matt McNeil went deep for a 3-0 lead.
Concordia then used a grand slam in the top of the 3rd to take their first lead of the game only to see the Panthers bring across three in the bottom half for the 6-4 lead.
Matt Collins hit a 2-run homerun scoring Travis Laver (Holland, Mich.) on the play and DU also got a run from Licon on a sac fly from Jake Loomans (Grandville, Mich.).
The seesaw battle would continue though as the Cardinals regained the lead in the 5th inning when they scored three runs for the 7-6 lead. After having a few chances to tie the game in the 5th and 6th innings, Davenport then went through a sloppy top of the 7th in terms of defense as they allowed Concordia to score four runs for the 11-6 advantage.
Austin Licon lifted the spirits for DU with a lead-off homerun in the bottom of the 7th and the Panthers eventually put two more runners on but were unable to bring any of them home as the game ended on a double-play ball.
Zak Gonzalez suffered his second loss of the season as the Panthers fall to 17-23 on the year and 6-10 in league play.
The doubleheader at St. Francis (Ill.) has been cancelled due to the weather in Joliet, IL which makes the next action for DU an away game at MCC foe Spring Arbor on April 28. The Panthers will then wrap up the WHAC season with a home and home series against Aquinas on Friday and Saturday.
