GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Davenport used timely hitting and solid pitching to help lead them to a 5-3 and 6-5 sweep over UM-Dearborn. The Lady Panthers are 37-13 on the year and move to 14-6 in conference play.
In game one the Panthers put the pressure on early scoring two runs in the first inning off RBI singles from Karlee Despres (Belmont, Mich.) and Kristin Miedema (Newaygo, Mich.). The score would remain 2-0 until the fifth when both teams would add runs with DU's coming off a homerun from Haley Stehouwer (Wyoming, Mich.).
The Panthers would take a 5-1 lead into the seventh inning after Kristina Krum (Kalamazoo, Mich.) would single to left field and bring two Panthers home.
After giving up two homeruns in the seventh inning to cut the lead to 5-3, Despres would come in with the bases loaded and two outs to strike out the final batter and earn her first save of the year. Sam Cole would be credited with the win on the mound to put the freshman at 18-5 on the year.
The Panthers would combine for nine hits in the game with Miedema and Heather Brusokas (Glendale, Calif.) each having two.
Game two would be a different story as the Panthers would find themselves battling from behind after giving up three runs in the first inning.
DU would start chipping away at the lead in the second when Ali Dawson (Galesburg, Mich.), Morgan Greenfield (Wyoming, Mich.), and Kelsey Egyhazi (Mishawaka, Ind.) would have back to back to back singles to load up the bases with two outs. Senior Stehouwer would then come up big with a double to left center to score two and put DU down one.
Davenport would then take the 4-3 lead in the third, capitalizing off UM-Dearborn miscues. The lead would not last for long though as the Wolves would put together a rally of their own and score two more runs in the fourth off four hits and one Panther error to go up 5-4. The Panthers would continue to battle as they would tie the game back up at 5-5 off an RBI single from Despres in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Both teams would go scoreless in the fifth, before Brusokas would send a homerun over the left field fence to put the Panthers up 6-5 heading into the seventh inning. With the bases loading and only one out in the top of the seventh, Despres would get the last two batters to ground out and pop up to give DU the 6-5 victory.
Brianna Carpenter (Irvine, Calif.) and Despres would combine to throw the seven inning game with Despres earning the victory.
The sweep completes the four game regular season series between these two teams with DU taking three out of the four games. The Panthers are now 37-13 and 14-6 in WHAC play and will be back in action Monday against Madonna University. Game time is set for 4:00pm in Livonia, Mich.
