First Grand Slam in DU Softball History Leads Panthers to Split Against #21 Madonna

Haley Stehouwer: First Grand Slam in DU History
Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

LIVONIA, Mich. – For the second time in four days the Lady Panthers split with #21 Madonna University. DU fell in game one 6-1, before run ruling the Crusaders 11-3 in 5 innings. DU is now 38-14 overall and 15-7 in WHAC action.
Madonna jumped on the board early off a Panthers miscue that turned a lead-off single into a triple, which would eventually lead to a first inning run off a fielder's choice ground ball. MU would add another run in the second and then two more in the third to take the 4-0 lead.
Haley Stehouwer (Wyoming, Mich.) would hit her eleventh homerun of the year in the top of the fourth to put DU on the board and cut the lead to 4-1. MU would then answer back in the bottom of the inning with another run and then one more in the sixth inning to seal the 6-1 victory.
Stehouwer and Kristin Miedema (Newaygo, Mich.) would account for the only two hits in the game, and Sam Cole (Belleville, Mich.) would suffer the loss on the mound pitching six innings with seven strikeouts.
Game two would be a different story as Davenport would combine for eleven runs off eleven hits, with four of those being homeruns.
Up 1-0 in the second inning Stehouwer connected on the first grand slam in DU softball history to put Davenport up 5-0 after two innings.
The Panther bats continued to stay hot with four more runs in the fourth and then two more in the fifth off back to back solo homeruns from Katie Cornman (Eastpointe, Mich.) and Heather Brusokas (Glendale, Calif.). Up 11-0 in the fifth Madonna would connect on a three-run homerun to put the score at 11-3, but the eight run mercy rule would still come into affect giving DU the victory.
Brusokas combined for three hits (two of them homeruns) and three RBI's in the game and Stehouwer and Miedema would each have two hits as well.
Karlee Despres (Belmont, Mich.) earned the victory on the mound giving up just two hits in five innings of work and striking out eight batters.
Davenport now sits as 38-14 overall and continues to remain second in the conference with a 15-7 record. DU will be back on the road Wednesday when they travel across town to take on Cornerstone University in a 4:00pm doubleheader.
