Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score
ADRIAN, Mich. - The Panthers' bats exploded for 20 runs in the first game to defeat Siena Heights 20-8, but the host Saints closed the day with big defensive plays to win 5-3 and gain the series split in Adrian. DU will host SHU on Monday at East Kentwood HS.
After struggling out of the gates against some of the best competition in the country, the Panthers have started to find their groove with two straight victories heading into WHAC play.
The bats kept rolling today as they started the first game of the double-header with 20 runs on 20 hits. DU accounted for two homeruns from Dan Brown (Bay City Mich.) and Matt Collins (Akron, Ohio) while three different players had at least three RBI.
Davenport put up five runs in the top of the first inning, added three more in the 3rd and then kept rolling with five runs in each of the 4th and 5th innings.
David Stuppy (Dowagiac, Mich.) led the offensive charge as the senior outfielder went 3/5 with 5 RBI and one run scored. Rob Bolster (Blissfield, Mich.) posted four RBI while Matt Collins had three on a perfect 5/5 game from the plate
After a slow outing on the mound to start from Tucker Gernhard (Stafford, Va.), Cody VanKoevering came in relief and picked up his 2nd win of the year while striking out three batters in just two innings pitched.
The second game was much more of a defensive battle as the Panthers were unable to bring home the runs when they needed to as they fell 5-3. DU still accounted for eight hits in the game but left four of those on base.
Most of the scoring came early in the game off both starters as the Panthers put up all three of their runs in the opening two frames while the Saints used a three run first and one run second to take control.
Zak Gonzalez (Comstock Park, Mich.) was solid on the mound for DU as the junior went four innings and gave up 5 runs (2 earned) on just five hits. It was the first loss of the year for Gonzalez.
Matt Collins continued his stellar play from the plate as the senior went 2/3 but the RBI's came from the top of the lineup as Rob Bolster drove in two of the three for DU.
Davenport is now 10-14 on the year as they will host the Saints on Monday at East Kentwood HS. The first game of the double-header is scheduled for a 1:00 PM start. Andy Westerburg and Brandon Romero are expected to start for DU.
