Pair of Grand Slams Lift DU to Sweep (4-1, 15-4) of Concordia on Friday

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Davenport used two grand slams today from Kristina Krum and Kristin Miedema to nail down second place in the WHAC Tournament which begins next week in Battle Creek.  The two homers were part of a doubleheader sweep (4-1, 15-3 in 5 innings) over Concordia on Friday afternoon.

Game one was a slow on from the start as neither offense could muster anything significant for the first four innings.  The host Cardinals picked up their lone run of the game in the bottom of the 3rd but DU rallied back with three in the fifth and one in the top of the 7th for the 4-1 victory.

Davenport got on the board in the 5th when Morgan Greenfield (Wyoming, Mich.) hit a one-out double and her pinch runner Jessica Fagan (Spokane, Wash.) was brought home on an error by a ball put in play by Katie Cornman (Eastpointe, Mich.).  Nikki Aldrich (Robinson, Ill.) then hit a two-run HR to put the Panthers up 3-0.

DU added an insurance run in the 7th when Haley Stehouwer (Wyoming, Mich.) connected on a homer to left field.  Sam Cole (Belleville, Mich.) was dominate on the mound as the freshman finished with a complete game five hitter.  Cole struck out three and walked just two.

Game two was a slugfest from the very start for Davenport as seniors Kristin Miedema (Newaygo, Mich.) and Kristina Krum (Kalamazoo, Mich.) each connected on grand slams.

Krum's first career grand slam came in the top of the first as Davenport brought across six runs.  After tacking on a single run in the second off the bat of Kristin Miedema, DU extended their lead to 13-0 with six more runs in the top of the 3rd.

Miedema hit her first career grand slam with one out in the 3rd that scored Heather Brusokas (Glendale, Calif.), Chelsey Dow (Lake Odessa, Mich.) and Haley Stehouwer.

Six different Panthers finished with at least two hits in the game as Stehouwer went 2/3, Dow – 2/4, Miedema – 2/2, Krum – 2/4, Fagan – 2/4 and Aldrich – 2/3.

Karlee Despres did not need all of the runs as the sophomore, despite a 3-run third inning, was in control.  Despres finished off a complete game to pick up her 10th win of the year finishing with four strikeouts and just five hits allowed.

The two wins lift Davenport to 42-14 on the year and they also secure the Panthers into the #2 seed in next week's WHAC Tourney.  The Lady Panthers will host Siena Heights on Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 PM.  DU will celebrate the last home games for seniors Nikki Aldrich, Kristin Miedema, Kristina Krum, Haley Stehouwer and Sandi Seaman.
