Complete Team Effort Lifts DU to Sweep (11-1, 5-3) of Siena Heights on Monday

April 5, 2010

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

KENTWOOD, Mich. - Brandon Romero continued to dominate on the mound today as the senior threw a complete game 1-hitter to lift the Panthers to an 11-1 win in the opening game. DU followed with a 5-3 win in game two for the doubleheader sweep as they took three of four from the Saints this weekend.

After splitting with Siena Heights on Saturday, the Panthers returned home for a double-dip today and used a very balanced effort on both the mound and from behind the plate to win 11-1 and 5-3.

Brandon Romero (Hart, Mich.) got the start in game one and after throwing the program's first no-hitter last week against Goshen, the senior followed it up with another dominating performance by throwing a complete game 1-hitter.

Romero struck out five Saints and his only hit allowed was a 4th inning homerun that gave the visitors their only run.

DU's bats stayed hot after scoring 23 runs on Saturday as they put up runs in four of their six at-bats today. Rob Bolster (Blissfield, Mich.) got things started with a single in the bottom of the first and was driven home by Matt Collins (Akron, Ohio).

DU would put up two more in the inning as Collins and Austin Licon (Rockford, Ill.) each came across the dish.

After two homeruns in the bottom of the 3rd from Licon and Dan Brown (Bay City, Mich.) gave DU a 5-0 lead, the Panthers broke the game open with a 5-spot in the fifth. Licon hit his second long ball of the game and Travis Laver (Holland, Mich.) hit a two-out 2RBI double that was followed by a 2RBI double from Bolster.

The win on the mound helped Romero improve to 4-1 on the year and lowered his team best ERA to 3.29.

The second game was very similar to the nightcap on Saturday as the pitchers controlled the pace of play with timely outs while not giving up much ground.

DU jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning after a few misplayed balls from the Saints. Austin Licon scored along with Matt McNeil (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) and Derrick Gentile (Sturgis, Mich.).

The Saints got another mid-game run to bring the score to 3-1 on a couple of DU defensive mistakes but the Panthers put their rally aside and tacked on one more in each of the fifth and sixth innings. SHU did post two runs in the top of the 7th, but it was not enough as Davenport escaped with the doubleheader sweep.

Andy Westerburg (Spring Lake, Mich.) got the win on the mound as the sophomore allowed just one run (0 earned) on three hits while striking out six. Andy is now 3-1 in 2010.

Davenport is now 12-14 on the year and 3-1 in league action. The Panthers host #15 Madonna University on Saturday and Sunday this weekend at East Kentwood HS
