GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - After battling in game one to a 7-6 victory in 9 innings, the DU bats went cold as they dropped game two 3-1. Davenport is now 21-25 and 9-11 in WHAC play.
Game one of the doubleheader would be a back and forth game with DU coming away with the 7-6 victory in the ninth inning.
Austin Licon would start the Panther scoring with a solo homerun to left center to begin the second inning. DU would add another run in the inning off an Aquinas miscue to go up 2-0.
Aquinas would tie the game back up in the bottom of the inning before Davenport would add three more runs in the third and then another in the fourth to take the 6-2 lead.
Dan Brown,
Derrick Gentile, and
James Folske would be credited with RBI's in those innings.
The Saints would answer back with four runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game up at 6-6 and force it into extra innings. In the top of the ninth Gentile would lead-off with a single through the left side and then be brought home off an RBI double from
Matt McNeil to seal the 7-6 victory.
Greg Bartlett would earn the victory on the mound with
Jesse Schneider closing out the game to earn the save.
In a must win situation in game two to earn a berth to the WHAC Conference Tournament, Davenport would account for just 3 hits and 1 run to fall 3-1 to the Saints.
Senior
Matt Collins would single to left field in the third inning to put DU up 1-0, but that would be their only lead of the game. Aquinas would add two runs in the fifth and then another in the sixth to go up 3-1 heading into the seventh.
Davenport would put together a late 7th inning rally but would strand both runners, and suffer the 3-1 loss.
Zak Gonzalez would suffer the loss on the mound for DU after pitching 4 innings and giving up two runs.
With the split today DU is now 9-11 in WHAC play and 21-25 overall.
