BATTLE CREEK, Mich. - Davenport reached the WHAC Tournament Championship game for the first time in their short two-history in which they had to defeat the WHAC regular season champions Madonna University twice to advance to the National Tournament. DU would fight all game but the end result would be a 4-3 victory in the favor of Madonna.
The game would go scoreless in the first two innings before Davenport would give up three runs in the third inning with two outs. Down 3-0, DU would answer back in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run homerun from
Karlee Despres (Belmont, Mich.) to cut the MU lead to just one.
Madonna would add another run in the fifth to put the score at 4-2. Senior
Kristina Krum (Kalamazoo, Mich.) would lead off the bottom of the fifth with a solo homerun to cut the lead to just one again.
The Panthers would fight in the last two innings but would come up short and suffer the 4-3 loss.
Sam Cole (Belleville, Mich.) would go four innings while Despres would finish the last three. The pitchers would combine to give up just seven hits with eight strikeouts, but seven walks and two hit batters would hurt them in the end.
The Lady Panthers finish the season with a 46-16 record and a second place finish in the WHAC.
