LIVONIA, Mich. - For the second day in a row, Davenport saw the momentum go back and forth as they split with Rochester and UM-Dearborn to finish second in the Julie Martin Memorial hosted by Madonna University. DU is now 8-5 on the year with a WHAC matchup with Dearborn scheduled for Tuesday.
In the opening match against Rochester, DU jumped out to a fast start by winning the opening two sets 25-11 and 25-19. Unfortunately that would be the last time they held the momentum as Rochester ran away with the final three sets 25-17, 25-15 and 15-10 to avenge their loss on Thursday night at home.
Davenport struggled on offense as they managed to hit only .103 for the match with
Brittany Bott (Hudsonville, Mich.) leading the way with 10 kills. No other DU player found double-digits in that same category as the team finished with 47 kills and 31 errors on 156 attempts.
The second match of the day saw the Panthers play much better from start to finish as they downed WHAC foe UM-Dearborn in a non-conference match 25-13, 25-20, 25-22. The team posted only two kills less than the first match of the day and hit at a .320 clip with only 13 errors.
Kelse Moon (Fremont, Mich.) and
Kassie Graves (White Cloud, Mich.) led the way collecting 12 and 13 kills respectively and
Brittany Bott (Hudsonville, Mich.) was again solid finishing with eight kills.
Kayla Vandermolen (Cedar Springs, Mich.) finished the day with a 35 assist performance against the Wolves to give the senior 70 on the day. Defensively, DU was led by junior
Courtney DePriest (Grand Rapids, Mich.) who finished with 12 digs in the three set win.
Kassie Graves (White Cloud, Mich.) and
Kelse Moon (Fremont, Mich.) were honored on the All-Tournament team as DU wound up as the second place team behind champion Madonna.
DU will open conference play on Tuesday when they travel to Dearborn to take on the same Wolves team that they defeated today. The match is set for a 7:00 PM start.
