Panthers Score Early and Often in 13-3 Romp of IPFW

Davenport will host Michigan State in crucial regional battle next weekend

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Davenport's D3 ice hockey team used a strong first period and cruised to a 13-3 victory Saturday against IPFW. The Panthers scored the first six goals and totaled 7 in the first period to take the early lead. For the season, DU improves to 22-9 in ACHA action and remains 9-3 in conference play.

Getting the scoring started for the Panthers was Chad Ouellette (Windsor, Ontario) at 5:39 of the first period. Justin Welker (Speedway, Ind.) added the second goal unassisted less than 2 minutes later for the early 2-0 lead. In the first period, Bryon Guerin (Jackson, Mich.), Garrett Russell (Midland, Mich.), Jason Kraemer (Livonia, Mich.) and Zack Feher (Livonia, Mich.) would all add scores to pull up a 6-0 margin over the Mastodons. The two teams would trade goals at the end of the period to make the score 7-1 after one period.

The Panthers would add one goal in the second and then score five more in the third. In the game, 10 Davenport players tallied goals with Welker, Feher and Sam Waldhart (Walker, Mich.) scoring two apiece. Adam Lippert (Hamilton, Ontario), Dylan Downs (Hastings, Mich.) and Norm Farr (Jenison, Mich.) also found the back of the net for the Panthers.

Cam Thomas (Kentwood, Mich.) picked up the win in goal for the Panthers, stopping 15 Mastodon shots. DU dominated shots on goal, finishing with 52.

The Panthers continue their five-game home stand next weekend when DU welcomes Michigan State University to the Patterson Ice Center for two games. The first contest starts Friday at 8:00 p.m. and will be broadcasted live on the DAN.
